Office driving cost: calculation method

For a Canadian commute, enter one-way kilometres and let the tool count the journey back each workday. Use the actual number of onsite days, especially if a compressed or hybrid schedule changes the number of return trips in a month.

Fuel used (litres) = monthly kilometres × L/100 km ÷ 100. Monthly fuel cost = litres × Canadian dollars per litre.

A lower L/100 km value means better fuel efficiency. Multiply the distance by L/100 km and divide by 100 to obtain litres.

Canadian commuting fuel cost: worked example

An 18 km one-way drive means 36 km per workday. For 22 days, that is 792 km. At 8 L/100 km and an illustrative C$1.65/L, monthly fuel cost is approximately C$104.54.

In Canada, the litres-per-100-kilometres efficiency input works in the opposite direction to mpg: a higher value means more gasoline for the same kilometres. Try your measured summer consumption and an illustrative winter figure on separate calculations to understand the impact of warm-ups, traffic and short trips.

The displayed CAD amount covers gasoline or diesel, not the full cost of a Canadian household's vehicle. Winter tyres, parking, tolls, repairs, registration, insurance and depreciation are outside this formula. A fuel allowance may therefore differ significantly from the cost of owning and operating the car.

Employee allowance versus monthly fuel expense

A fuel budget in Canadian dollars is not the same as an employer's per-kilometre travel allowance. Ordinary commuting, work trips between locations and reimbursement policies can be treated differently. Use this tool to estimate litres and CAD fuel spending, then refer to your own employer's rules for any entitlement.

Frequently asked questions about office commuting expenses

How much does it cost to drive to work per month in Canada?

Enter the one-way driving distance in kilometres, the actual office days and the vehicle's fuel consumption in L/100 km. The calculator doubles the distance for the return journey and applies the CAD-per-litre price you enter. Do not convert L/100 km into km/L or use a fuel price from another province without checking your local receipt.

How do I calculate a hybrid schedule's monthly gas expense?

For a Canadian employee travelling 20 km each way over 20 days, the car covers 800 km. At an illustrative 8.0 L/100 km and CAD 1.60 per litre, the fuel bill is CAD 102.40. If attendance drops to 12 days, the same assumptions give CAD 61.44; the difference is CAD 40.96 in fuel alone.

Does the result equal a Canada mileage reimbursement allowance?

No. This is an estimate of gasoline or diesel costs only. A kilometre allowance may cover more than fuel, and ordinary commuting may be treated differently from employment-related travel. Confirm eligibility with the relevant employer policy and tax guidance.

What if my employer gives a fixed office petrol or gas allowance?

Compare the allowance amount in CAD with the estimated monthly gas expense, but remember that a kilometre rate may be intended to account for costs other than fuel. A positive allowance balance here does not prove that ownership costs or employment-related travel are fully covered.

Canadian example: winter consumption can change the monthly budget

Imagine a 16 km one-way commute, 20 office days per month and a vehicle using 8.2 L/100 km. The monthly return travel is 640 km, requiring 52.48 litres. At an illustrative CAD 1.65 per litre, fuel spending is approximately CAD 86.59. A 12-day attendance month covers 384 km, uses about 31.49 litres and costs approximately CAD 51.96.

Now hold the 20-day schedule and fuel price steady but use an example winter efficiency of 10.0 L/100 km. Fuel use rises to 64 litres, or CAD 105.60 for the month—about CAD 19.01 more than the 8.2 L/100 km case. The winter figure here is a hypothetical scenario, not a forecast for your car. Cold starts, idling, heating, snow conditions and short journeys can affect real driving consumption, so your own refill records are a better input than a single ideal rating.

Canadian consumption is often shown as L/100 km, where a larger number means higher fuel use. If you are comparing two vehicles or seasonal driving patterns, use the same return distance, attendance days and CAD-per-litre price to understand the efficiency difference. Parking, maintenance and employer kilometre reimbursement remain outside this fuel-only estimate.

Canada: budget for variable consumption without changing the route

Consider a 30 km one-way commute travelled 18 days: that is 1,080 km of return travel. At 7.5 L/100 km the car needs 81 litres. An illustrative CAD 1.60 per litre puts the fuel budget at CAD 129.60. With exactly the same distance and price but a hypothetical 9.0 L/100 km, the budget rises to CAD 155.52—CAD 25.92 more in the month.

These examples illustrate why a cold-weather month or a congestion-heavy route may merit a different efficiency assumption. They are not forecasts of seasonal fuel economy or current station prices. Use refills measured in litres and actual kilometres to select a realistic input. If your employer pays a kilometre allowance for approved business travel, compare it separately from ordinary commuting fuel estimates.
