How this calculator works

Canada's comparison figure is litres per 100 kilometres: divide litres bought by kilometres driven and multiply by 100. A lower result indicates less fuel consumed for an equal trip. Enter the dollar-per-litre price to estimate CAD fuel spending and cents per kilometre; this page does not claim the example pump price is current. Do not interpret this L/100 km result as kilometres per litre.

A worked real-mileage example for Canada

Driving 600 km and refilling with 45 litres means 7.5 L/100 km. At an example CAD 1.65 per litre, fuel spending is CAD 74.25, or about CAD 0.12 per kilometre. These figures are arithmetic examples, not current pump prices.

Use the right local units

In Canadian L/100 km ratings, a lower value means lower fuel use. Unlike km/L, litres per 100 km is a consumption measure. Enter kilometres driven and your litres of fuel, and replace illustrative prices with your receipt.

Practical tips for reliable results

For Canadian refill records, start with a full tank and a recorded kilometre reading, then enter kilometres driven and all litres purchased until a matching full refill. In winter, long warm-ups and short city trips can affect the figure; compare a few similar trips or tankfuls rather than treating one cold month as the vehicle's permanent efficiency. Never enter the tank's advertised capacity instead of litres actually purchased.

Turn Canadian L/100 km into a useful decision

In Canada, a lower L/100 km reading means less fuel consumed for a given distance. At 7.5 L/100 km, a 1,000 km journey needs 75 litres. At 9.0 L/100 km, the same journey needs 90 litres. That 15-litre difference would cost CAD 24.75 at an illustrative CAD 1.65 per litre. Comparing litres consumed at the same distance is often clearer than comparing tank-to-tank spending alone.

Use the fuel quantity on your refill receipt and the kilometres driven since the previous full fill. If a top-up was partial, wait until the tank is full again and account for intervening fuel additions; otherwise the calculation can look misleadingly good or bad. Repeating the method across several full-tank intervals makes the comparison more meaningful.
