How this calculator works

Use the miles on your trip odometer and the number of US gallons actually dispensed at the next comparable full-tank fill-up. Dividing miles by those gallons gives measured US mpg; multiplying purchased gallons by your dollar-per-gallon pump price estimates spending. The calculation reflects your driving, not an EPA label or a live gasoline quotation. Keep US gallons separate from larger Imperial gallons.

A worked real-mileage example for United States

If you drive 250 miles using 10 US gallons, the result is 25 US mpg. At an example $3.75 per gallon, total fuel spending is $37.50, or $0.15 per mile. These figures are arithmetic examples, not current pump prices.

Use the right local units

US mpg uses US gallons, which differ from the Imperial gallons used in the UK. Use the full travel distance in miles and your vehicle's measured efficiency. Pump prices on this page are examples, not live quotations.

Practical tips for reliable results

After filling to the normal automatic pump shutoff, reset or photograph the trip odometer. At the next full fill-up, note miles since the previous fill and the gallons paid for; include any partial refills in between. A difference in pump cutoff or substantial idling makes a single result less representative. Track several US mpg readings before deciding whether traffic or your vehicle has really changed.

What does your measured US mpg actually mean?

A measured 25 US mpg means the car travelled 25 miles on one US gallon. For 100 miles at the same efficiency, it would use about four gallons. At an illustrative $3.75 per gallon, those 100 miles cost $15 in petrol. This connects your fill-up result directly to a real road-trip budget without relying on a manufacturer's idealised estimate.

Compare more than one complete tank before judging the car's typical mileage. Short cold-weather journeys, idling and different route mixes can make one tank unrepresentative. Start with a full tank, note the trip odometer, then refill to a similar level and enter the fuel actually added. Do not enter the tank's rated capacity unless that is genuinely what you filled.
