Gas Cost Calculator USA

Calculate the gas money needed for a trip, based on miles driven, your car’s real-world miles per US gallon and the gas price you pay. Get gallons needed, total trip fuel cost and dollars per mile.

Planning regular travel to work? Use the USA monthly office commute calculator.

Calculate a one-off journey

Enter the complete journey distance, including the return leg if needed. Defaults are illustrative examples, not live pump prices.

Your result will appear here. Press Calculate to update it.

USA worked example

100 miles at 25 US mpg uses 4 US gallons. At an illustrative USD 4.00 per US gallon, fuel costs USD 16.00.

For an out-and-back journey of 100 miles each way, enter 200 miles. If your distance already includes both directions, do not double it again.

Use the correct local units

Use US mpg with a price per US gallon. Do not substitute UK Imperial mpg; the gallon sizes differ. Prices vary by state, station and fuel grade.

Miles ÷ US mpg = US gallons. Multiply fuel used by your actual price per US gallon. The result covers fuel only.

How much gas will I need for a 300-mile road trip?

At an illustrative 25 US mpg, a 300-mile drive uses 12 US gallons. At a sample gas price of $4.00 per US gallon, the trip costs $48.00 in fuel, or $0.16 per mile. These are examples, not live US gas prices or a quote for your vehicle.

Formula: trip miles ÷ miles per US gallon = gallons required. Gallons required × dollars per US gallon = trip fuel cost. If 300 miles is only the outbound leg and you return the same way, enter 600 miles to include both directions.

How do I estimate gas cost for a month?

Use the same arithmetic for all planned monthly miles. For example, an 800-mile month at 25 mpg and $4.00 per gallon requires 32 US gallons and costs $128.00 in gasoline. For daily work travel and working-day counts, try the USA monthly office commute cost calculator.

Plan a route with different driving conditions

Calculate urban and highway legs separately using the measured economy for each, then add their fuel costs. If you expect different pump prices along the route, budget each leg at its expected price instead of treating one national average as a quote for every stop.

For a side-by-side unit-cost comparison, open the city versus highway comparison and select USA. Enter your measured efficiency; brochure figures may not reflect traffic, temperature, load or AC use.

What belongs in the rest of your trip budget?

Add parking, tolls and any accommodation separately. Servicing, tyres, insurance and depreciation are ownership costs; this fuel estimate does not include them. Keep a fuel estimate separate from an employer mileage reimbursement rate.

Common journey questions

Can I use this for diesel?

Yes. Enter your diesel pump price and measured diesel vehicle economy. The reference panel is labelled petrol/gasoline; do not apply it to diesel without replacing the price.

Why is the actual bill different?

Idling, traffic, weather, detours and a different fuel grade can change consumption or price. Run a conservative efficiency scenario and compare it with your normal measured average.

Can I use a price in cents or pence?

Enter the major currency unit shown by the field: USD. Divide cents or pence by 100 first. Keep the fuel-volume unit consistent with the label.
