How this calculator works

For a US shared drive, enter the complete miles everyone travelled together, the vehicle's measured US mpg and the price in dollars per US gallon. The calculator converts miles to gallons, adds the tolls and parking entered in dollars and produces an equal cost per paying traveller. This is a planning estimate: it does not look up addresses or determine which friend paid each receipt.

A worked trip-cost split for United States

A 120-mile trip at 30 US mpg uses 4 US gallons. At an illustrative $3.50 per gallon, fuel costs $14. Add $6 for tolls and $4 for parking: four paying travellers would each contribute $6. These figures are arithmetic examples, not current pump prices.

Use the right local units

US mpg uses US gallons, which differ from the Imperial gallons used in the UK. Use the full travel distance in miles and your vehicle's measured efficiency. Pump prices on this page are examples, not live quotations.

Practical tips for reliable results

If you picked up a friend halfway through an interstate trip, run one calculation for the first leg and another for the shared leg rather than charging everyone for the same mileage. Include the driver in the number of contributors only when they will actually pay a share. Keep individual meals and vehicle ownership costs separate from the pooled fuel and toll receipts.

Plan a shared US road trip using real receipts

For an interstate trip, first add the outward and return mileage that everyone actually travelled together. If the car averages 30 US mpg and petrol is an illustrative $3.50 per US gallon, fuel alone costs about 11.7 cents per mile. A 120-mile journey therefore costs about $14 in fuel, before parking and tolls. This lets you sense-check the estimate before asking friends to contribute.

If some travellers join only part of the route, a simple equal split may not be fair. Calculate each shared leg separately, using the people in the vehicle on that leg, and add costs such as toll receipts to the appropriate leg. This calculator makes one equal split; it does not automatically reconcile who paid the pump or toll charges in advance.
