How this calculator works

Enter the shared journey in miles and UK fuel economy in Imperial mpg. Litres used are miles divided by Imperial mpg multiplied by 4.54609, then multiplied by the pump price entered in pounds per litre. Add jointly incurred road charges or car-park payments and divide by the paying passenger count. A pump price displayed as 150 pence must be entered as 1.50, not 150.

A worked trip-cost split for United Kingdom

For 90 miles at 45 Imperial mpg, the car uses about 9.09 litres. At an illustrative £1.50 per litre, fuel costs £13.64. After £2 tolls and £4 parking, two paying travellers each contribute about £9.82. These figures are arithmetic examples, not current pump prices.

Use the right local units

UK fuel pumps dispense litres, while mpg means miles per Imperial gallon. One Imperial gallon is approximately 4.54609 litres. Never mix a US mpg figure with an Imperial mpg input; the resulting costs would be misleading.

Practical tips for reliable results

An airport collection or motorway journey may include a car-park payment that only some travellers benefited from. Include a charge only if all named contributors agreed to share it. The field for parking and other shared costs is suitable for such a receipt; it is not an automatic congestion- or emissions-charge estimate. Split different pick-up legs separately for a fairer calculation.

Why UK mpg and petrol litres need a conversion

UK cars may display miles per Imperial gallon, but forecourts sell petrol and diesel by the litre. To estimate litres for a trip, divide miles by Imperial mpg and multiply by 4.54609. At 45 Imperial mpg, a 90-mile journey uses about 9.09 litres; at an illustrative £1.50 per litre, that is about £13.64 in fuel, excluding other shared expenses. A US mpg figure cannot be substituted directly for Imperial mpg.

When sharing a UK journey, include any return mileage and jointly paid parking or road charges. If everyone contributes equally, divide the full shared cost by the number of paying travellers. For a journey with different pick-up or drop-off points, estimate separate legs to avoid charging a short-distance passenger for the whole drive.
