UK vehicle economy and fuel costs

UK distances are often in miles while fuel is sold by the litre. Divide miles by Imperial mpg, then multiply by 4.54609 to get litres. A pump price of 150 pence is GBP 1.50/L. Plug-in hybrids require both fuel and charging costs; a single weighted mpg value does not describe every journey.

Source and coverage

4,547 source entries across 52 makes. VCA snapshot; mixed model labels and source dates.

UK entries use WLTP combined figures. Petrol and diesel economy is shown in Imperial mpg; electric consumption uses kWh/100 km. Model labels and source change dates do not necessarily identify the registration year.

Convert UK mpg to a cost per mile

UK drivers often measure distance in miles but purchase petrol or diesel per litre. An Imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. WLTP combined ratings from the Vehicle Certification Agency support comparisons, but real consumption depends on conditions and driver behaviour.

Illustrative example: 100 miles at 45 Imperial mpg uses around 10.10 litres. At £1.50 per litre the estimated fuel portion is £15.15. This is an example price, not a live pump quote.

Do not use a plug-in hybrid's weighted mpg alone as an estimate for every journey: charging may also contribute. Work through the Golf fuel-cost guide.
