Volkswagen fuel economy in UK

Compare the 18 model labels in this stored Volkswagen catalogue before choosing a variant.

UK entries use WLTP combined figures. Petrol and diesel economy is shown in Imperial mpg; electric consumption uses kWh/100 km. Model labels and source change dates do not necessarily identify the registration year.

Model groups and recorded ranges

Ranges describe different variants in the source, not the expected best and worst economy of one vehicle. Larger mpg or km/L is more efficient; smaller L/100km or kWh/100km is more efficient. Do not compare different units directly or treat a plug-in hybrid weighted figure as fuel-only consumption.

Make a usable comparison

For a commute, calculate the same monthly distance for each candidate, then use the appropriate fuel grade and local price. The table is a way to select inputs; purchase price, maintenance, insurance and resale are outside these fuel-only figures.

Compare Volkswagen Golf versions by powertrain

A Golf badge can cover different engines, gearboxes, fuels and powertrains. Select the precise source variant: a full range of mpg values across models is not a forecast for one car. Higher Imperial mpg means fewer litres used over the same number of miles, provided the ratings are comparable.

Electric kWh/100 km and plug-in hybrid energy costs must be considered separately from petrol-only mpg. See the Golf journey example.

Convert a UK Volkswagen efficiency figure into monthly pounds

For a fuel-powered Volkswagen, start with the exact variant's Imperial mpg rather than the full model range in the table. Consider an illustrative 800-mile monthly driving total: at 50 Imperial mpg, fuel use is 16 Imperial gallons, or 72.74 litres. At a hypothetical £1.50 per litre the petrol budget is about £109.11. If a different car achieves 40 Imperial mpg on the same route, it needs 90.92 litres and costs about £136.38. The difference is roughly £27.28 per month in fuel only, before other ownership expenses.

For ID-series battery-electric entries, kWh/100 km is a different measurement from mpg. Choose a charging price in pounds per kWh and calculate electricity separately; do not multiply an EV consumption figure by a petrol price per litre. Source values here may represent distinct trims or testing dates, so confirm the model and use the Golf variant guide for more detail. These are arithmetic examples, not current forecourt or charging quotes.
