A worked 100-miles example

Using the first listed reference of 35 US mpg, the arithmetic is 100 ÷ 35 × 3.50 = USD 10.00. That is USD 0.100 per mile.

For a 40-miles daily return commute over 22 attendance days, total distance is 880 miles. Under the same assumptions, fuel costs USD 88.00. Add parking and tolls separately. If the price rises 10% with distance and consumption unchanged, fuel spending also rises 10%.

Reference variants

EPA combined fuel economy is expressed in US miles per gallon. Match the model year, engine, transmission and drive layout; identical-looking model names can have different ratings. Source: EPA Fuel Economy.

Use your own refill result

Fill to the same automatic pump cutoff, record the odometer, then record distance and all fuel added until the next full tank. Include partial refills between full tanks. Use multiple cycles to reduce the influence of a single fill. A short journey or a partial tank alone is not a reliable measurement.

For a US road trip, divide miles by US mpg and multiply by dollars per US gallon. A UK mpg figure uses a larger gallon and must not be substituted. A regular-gasoline example should not be used as the price for a vehicle requiring premium.
